Sealed Cube S1, E2: day 2

Day 2 of the Premiere League begins with the duel of the two losing decks from day 1, with 1a GW hosting 3a GWr.

Game 1, 1a GW lays the better curve while 3a GWr stumbles on mana and cannot deal with all the opposing fliers. 1:0.

Game 2 goes a lot longer, but 1a GW still overwhelms 3a GWr with a patiently assembled army that can take a lot of punishment from Pacify effects, use Selesnya Guildmage to avoid the damage from Brigid and, finally, swarm over with all fliers in a Concerted Effort. 2:0

The second match pits deck 4a Wgr against 2a RB.

Game 1 becomes a very creature centric damage race. 2a RB gets the upper hand, and Scourglass can only reset the board except for Foriysian Totem, 2hich survives and hits for lethal when Premature Burial removes the only post-Scourglass blocker on 4a Wgr's side. 0:1.

Game 2, deck 2a RB could stabilize the board behind on life and attack with some Empty the Warrens tokens skulking via Behind the Scenes. However, 4a Wgr just managed to kill 2a with a hasty hit from Vengevine and a pumped Stillmoon Cavalier to tie the match 1:1.

In the decider, 2a RB has to mulligan again (this time a one-lander). Attacks once again go back and forth, with 2 RB under more pressure. A Scourglass does not make a decisive difference as 2a RB has a lot of removal accumulated to hit 4a's post-Scourglass creatures. However, some unopposed 1/1s and a single hit from Vengevine (before it meets a Heat Ray) are enough for 4 Wgr to finish things with a large Fireball to the head for a 2:1 victory.

Premiere League standings after two days:

1. 4a Wgr 2-0, 4:2

2. 1a GW 1-1, 3:2

3. 2a RB 1-1, 3:3

4. 3a GWr 0-2, 1:4

In the second league, 3b BU hosts 4b RBu.

Game 1, 4b RBu puts a few more threats on the table, removes a few more opposing creatures than 3b BU, draws a few cards with Sygg and eventually overwhelms 3b. 0:1.

Game 2, 3b BU mulligans a five land hand with no action and 4b RBu mulligans a one-lander (and keeps another with all one and two drops). 3b BU tries to keep the slow but steady, very low curve start of 4b RBu at bay with a steady stream of overoiced removal, and without building a board presence of its own (Archivist only draws one card before being killed by Mogg Fanatic). But 4b RBu draws about all of the low curve aggro part of its deck and pushes through enough damage to close the deal. 0:2.

Match two pits 1b UBR against 2b UW.

In game 1, a Hunted Horror stalls out the board until 2b UW gets some flying attackers going. 2b's Stratoceppelid is promptly put on a Dream Leash after its first attack and then destroyed by 2b's Vengeance to keep the air clear for attacks. A steady stream of small flyers keeps pecking away at 1b's life total and acivating Angel's Tomb for the win, 0:1.

Before game 2, 2b UW has to mulligan a one-lander. The game goes back and forth with no clear advantage; the stalemate centers on Elusive Tormentor which is Confiscated, then Grixis Charmed back to hand (not sure whether I ever used the option before) and replayed to force through the last four damage by transforming to Mist form and back. 1:1.

In the decider, it is 1b UBRs turn to mulligan a one-lander. This encourages 2b UW to keep a speculative five land hand with a bounce spell and a single four-drop. Despite falling behind against the UW flyers (once again doing a lot of damage with the hard-to-remove Angel's Tomb), 1b UBR manages to parry here and there and slownthings down enough to just win with two rounds of making different creatures unblockable via Warchanter of Mogis while 2b draws more lands than anything else. 2:1.

MVPs are once again Epiphany at the Drownyard for 1b UBR and Angel's Tomb for 2b UW.

Second League Standings after two days

1. 4b RBu 2-0, 4:0

2. 2b UW 1-1, 3:2

3. 1b UBR 1-1, 2:3

4. 3b BU 0-2, 0:4

SBOA 2026 - Samstag

Sealed Cube S1, E1: day 1

Premier League season opener is 1a GW at 2a RB.

Game 1, 2a RB is ahead in the race but 1a GW stabilizes with three creatures with counters from Incremental Growth and Flying / Protection from black via Concerted Effort. 2a RB then try to go wide with more creatures, or over the top with Ashling thr Pilgrim. At the end going wide is the path to victory, 1:0.

Game 2, 1a GW has the better curve and puts pressure on, sending over anall flying Concerted Effort Team and dealing the last damage by reinforcing the one unblocked weenie in the final attack. 1:1.

Game 3, 1a GW is flooded and 2a RB keeps pushing damage through. An Elvish Harbinger tries to bring out a flyer to defend against Moltensteel Dragon, but 2a RB saved a Premature Burial for it for the win, 2:1.

Nice aggro mirror.

Match two is a zoo mirror. In game 1, 3a GWr sees all of its larger creatures removed from combat by 4a Wgr despite a mulligan, but can tread water with life gained from Souls's Attendant until flying Weenies can decide the game, with the on-board clock reduced by one turn by Seeds of Strength.

Game 2, deck 3a GWr has to mulligan two one-landers in a row. No surprize then that 4a can slowly build up some advantage, but it takes all of Scourglass killing its own Vengevine from under a Pacify effect, two creatures to return it from the graveyard and multiple repeatable tap effects to take game 2 to draw the match 1-1.

Game 3, 4a Wgr fires an early Scourglass tonget rid of Brigid. 3a GWr has a hand full of removal and combat tricks but toonfew creatures to stall ground attacks, and 4a ends things a few turns early with a Fireball tomthe head. 2:1 for 4a.

First League standings

1. 2a RB 1-0, 2:1

1. 4a Wgr 1-0, 2:1

3. 1a GW 0-1, 1:2

3. 3a GWr 0-1, 1:2

The Second League season is opened by 4b RBu hosting 1b UBR.

4b RBu begins with a one-land hand mulligan, but takes the game nevertheless with patient attacks from Elusive Tormentor and just enough other threats to overload 1b's defences.

Game 2, 4b RBu always has a little more pressure on the table, helped by an Epiphany at the Drownyard and by 1b UBR stalling on two Mountains for a turn or two. Thatvis a straightforward 2:0.

The second match has 2b UW host 3b UB.

In game 1, 2b UW lays a nice curve incl. stealing Merfolk Seestalkers and wins by having more small creatures.

Game two has 3b UB put more pressure on 2a with early creatures, but needs too long to find blue mana to get its heavy fliers on the table and is wrestled down to zero life by more UW weenies, 2:0.

Second League standings

1. 4b RBu 1-0, 2:0

1. 2b UW 1-0, 2:0

3. 3b UB 0-1, 0:2

3. 1b UBR 0-1, 0:2

Sealed Cube S0, E4: fourth deckbuilding round

This pool has so many solid white cards, and limited numbers of very strong arguments to play anything else, that I'll go with a White deck splashing some green. For the first time I will impact the quality of any secondary deck built from the remaining cards in the pool by splashing Fireball off of two two-color lands, a spellbomb horizon and multiple mana creatures that can make red mana.

The rightmost column of cards has the realistic sideboard candidates.

The curve is relatively low, so I'll go with 16 lands plus spellbomb. One mountain for the splash leaves place for an 8/7 or 9/6 split. As I need green for my mana fixers, and have two colorless ways to access white mana (Signet and Spellbomb) I'll go for 8/7. The two color lands both don't give me white so I will count them like forests and add 8 planes and 5 forests.

The remaining cards promise an exciting ride for a deck with a very aggressive low curve, but complicated by three colors overall with several double color 4-drops. It will be interesting to see how often this attacks quickly and all-out, and how often it stutters on mana.

I have 13 red mana symbols, 12 black and 7 blue. The aggressive creatures are all black, though, so I will be greedy and play 16 lands: 7 swamps, 5 mountains, 4 islands.

A test match ran closer than expected. In game 1 on the play Angel of Mercy took the win after Bonds of Faith denied a fully paid-for Basalt Gargoyle the option to block it. Game 2 starts with a long control battle and hardly any creature sticking on either side. However, Viashino Fangtail keeps pinging from under Bound by Moonsolver, and the sideboarded Ember Gale takes it for 4b RBu. The decider again goes back and forth quite some time but Territorial Batterskull and Vengevine stick and win it for another win of the a against the b deck from the same pool.

Metal Tuesday(s)

Although work day evening gigs are not the best way to enjoy long evenings of live music, I attended nice concerts not on one, but two Tuesdays recently.

On June 9 1914 were in Die Stadtmitte Karlsruhe, and at very short notice Nocturnis from Offenburg were invited to support them as a very congenial match regarding subject matter and musical genre.

Nocturnis:

I also learned something new about 1914: the creative head and vocalist is not only a privately interested history nerd, but a professional archeologist digging up historical WW1 sites. This includes finding, identifying and reburying, sometimes even repatriating remains of fallen soldiers in southwestern Ukraine. That makes it even more remarkable to appreciate the path he took on choosing music in general, and blackened death metal in particular, to transport his findings from archive visits etc to a wider audience.

1914

Just one week later I timed a visit to my parents to attend a classic Death Metal performance at Kaminwerk Memmingen.

Support was Embryonic Autopsy. Loud, crisp, and would probably get better the morenoften you hear them (which I would consider a strength, not an issue).

Main act was Six Feet Under, where the vocalist compensates for the other band members' bald heads with dreadlocks down to his ankles. Music is more avvessible with driving rhythms and a full sound (two guitars are better than one in that sense, I guess).

Sealed Cube S0, E3: third deck building round

For the third build I'm looking at GW creatures splashing red. Rightmost column in the picture is a sideboard with situational cards (artifact/enchantment removal, Chandra's Fury) and a number of cards that didn't make the cut but might occasionally find a spot.

With two red sources and two ways to find a mountain (plus Pale Recluse to find green or white) I feel that a single mountain is enough for 4 red mana symbols. 15 white and 9 green manq symbols with two red and one white source already in mean I should get away with 7 Plains, 6 Forests.

As in the previous builds, the primary build isn't really using much (well, maybe Moonglove Extract and Warped Landscape) that would be used for an alternative UB build, so I did that one, too. In this photo, the sideboard is top left.

This is a straightforward two color deck that mostly needs early black, so with 19 black and 15 blue mana symbols I will run 10 swamps and 7 islands and add Forbidden Orchard to the sideboard as additional option.

In a first test match,  both decks play mostly along their curve but 3a RGw keeps going while 3b BU draws more land than anything else and goes down quickly. Game 2 is won for 3b BU by Geralf's Masterpiece, recovered from Guard Duty via Unsummon, and eliminating the very powerful Scryb Ranger to free its patch. Game 3 is a closer version of game 1 for a final result of 2-1.

At least I feel validated in my deckbuilding when my primary builds keep beating the secondary builds from the same pool...

Sealed Cube S0, E2: the second deck(s?)

Deckbuilding from the second set of six boosters reveals a very different type of RB deck: low curve aggro with many cheap creatures, lots of 1-for-1 removal, and a few strong creatures to hammer home the last few points of damage. Includes both Phyrexian and Foriysian Totem and an Empty the Warrens in case a go wide strategy is warranted.

The photo shows 25 cards in the main, in the final build Hoarder's Greed and Verschlingender Schatten join the cards in the right most column for the sideboard.

The mana base is a lot less demanding than in the previous Grixis deck, and should be able to sustain two double black cards and a Strip Mine with 12 black and 11 red mana symbols, so I will try 9 Swamp, 6 Mountain (and a Wooded Foothills as seventh Mountain).

Once again I used nothing for this deck that would matter for a second deck built from the rest of the cardpool. As green is utterly unexciting, I'll try a 16 land flying / beatdown deck as a secondary.

I can't bring yself to pay the 3 life per use for Tarnished Citadel, but will play a Lair, a Ravnica bounceland and a storage land to get away with 16 lands total. I have 12 white mana symbols with one double-white card, 11 blue mana symbols at higher cost and will add 7 Islands and 6 Plains for a total of 9 white and 8 blue sources.

In a first test match between the two, game 1 both mulligan (2b UW twice - drawing Lair and bounceland as only lands each time!) and race each other with small creatures. 2a RB gets there first. Game 2, 2a UW is mana flooded for a quick 0-2 defeat.

Sealed Cube Season 0 Episode 0 : Intro

A new gaming project: I want to use my growing Core Cube to build a number of Sealed Decks and play them against each other.

The Cube: built from the boosts I used over the years for Sealed, Drafts, Winston Draft. The design goal is to create a Core-Set-Like experience, i.e. exactly not a powered Cube. Instead, I want to stay very much in line with the core tenets of the color pie. This implies aspects like

  • more spells, less creatures in blue, black, red
  • removal and direct damage in black and red
  • small creatures in white and blue, evasion in blue (flying also in white)
  • mana ramp and color fixing always touches green (i.e.no non-green multi color lands or artifacts)
  • card draw and counters in blue
  • big creatures in green

I don't pay attention to rarities, but do try to have a good mix of "normal" cards and not too many specials, bombs or build- around cards.

I build 15-card-boosters with a default of (exception do apply):

  • one cheap (1-3 mana) and one expensive (4+) Card for each color and for multi color for a total of 12 cards
  • one artifact (mostly colorless , colored artifacts are treated as colored cards) and one land (mostly, but not only, mana fixers)
  • one card that is a kind of "first pick", e.g. unconditional removal, bomb creatures or planeswalkers

I have no limit to the Cube size, it is much larger than the minimum 24 boosters = 360 cards

The League Format: current plan is

  • 40 card decks built from six boosters, with sideboards
    • first builds look like the ability to build a second, maybe slightly weaker, deck out of the same pool might occur more often than not
  • 4 decks in 2nd league, 4-8 decks in 1st league
  • Round Robin within each league (maybe even away and home games with home choosing to go first or draw first)
  • last deck from 2nd league is dissolved, last two decks from 1st league are relegated to 2nd league and replaced by one net new deck and the 2nd league champion
    • while the leagues grow to their intended size, dissolving decks can be skipped and/or only one deck be relegated to 2nd league

Sealed Cube season 0, episode 1: the first deck(s)

Here's the first deck(s) for my Core Cube Sealed League.

Deckbuilding has no clear favorite concept emerging from the first six boosters, but as the two candidate decks have practically no overlap in the cardpool I'll just build both.

The first idea is a GW deck with

  • lots of (well, seven...) Elves but limited synergy (only Immaculate Magistrate really benefits from many other Elves in play, and Elvish Harbinger can find it
  • Tromp the Domains as a strong reason to go green, although a two color deck isn't ideal
  • the combo of Concerted Effort and Crash the Ramparts as a poor man's DIY Overrun
Here are the cards (the two at the bottom left are sideboard). If you look carefully you will notice that apparently I managed to put two dauntless Cathars into the cube - not so unlikely given that the cube is rather large and keeps growing slowly over the years. I will take one of them out of the cube when I retire this deck.

For mana, I have 13 green and 14 white mana symbols, with two double-white and one double-green cards and two green mana dorks, so I'll go for 9 Forest, 8 Plains (unfortunately none of the multi color lands were GW, with most color fixing in BG and thus useless for either deck I'm building).

The other deck is what this cube is best at: a Grixis combination of lots of removal and clunky, expensive, weird creatures. No overwhelming bomb creatures, though, so there is some risk involved with having 10 double-colored cards spread over all Grixis colors. The three cards top right are promising sideboard options. (After taking the photo, I added Brutal Expulsion to the sideboard, too, the picture mistakenly shows 24 cards for the main. And I moved Guttural Response to the other deck's sideboard.)

I have 9 blue mana symbols (2 double-blue cards), 15 black (5 double-black, incl. a BB Hunted Horror) and 10 red (2 double-red) with only one Jund Panorama to find a Mountain or Swamp. So I will try running 5 Islands, 6 Swamps, 5 Mountains and hope the deck doesn't get color screwed too much.

However, I like that the cube doesn't make it too easy to build overwhelming decks around red or black removal, so it will be interesting to see where the power vs. consistency tension leaves these decks.

A first friendly test match between them ended 2-0. In game 1, 1a GW just played lots of creatures and pushed through damage while 1b UBR couldn't find a second Swamp to play its double-black creatures or pump Evernight Shade. in game 2, 1b UBR initially created some pressure but 1a GW reset the game with Magus of the Disk (keeping its emerging star Oakhame Adversary alive with Turn to Mist) and then once again overwhelmed its opponent with lots of creatures in the air. Some sequencing mistakes and some unlucky draws (no removal for opposing flyers, no Swamps to get Evernight Shade to lethal power) meant defeat for 1b UBR.

Workbench Mai 2026
