Season Opener HOM@STL: Opening jitters and homering hitters
Home team Stars' starter suffers from season opening jitters just like the great Satchel Paige, except that Satchel allowed one run in each of the first three innings, while Brown allows the Homestead Grays to bat around and score three right in the top of the first.
However, guest pitcher Brown seems to suffer from the same problems, giving up two runs on doubles from leadoff Cool Papa Bell and Buck Leonards and an RBI single from Home Run Johnson.
The jitters continue into the second frame as Brown gives up another four runs on a single, a double, an error and a homerun before recording the first out.
After that initial scoring bout, both pitchers settle in until the sixth when Brown gets into a prolonged period of trouble again. Two innings, eight hits and five runs later the Grays are ahead 12:4 and the game seems to be all but over.
However, the Stars keep battling, and after a solo homer from Cool Papa Bell in the eighth, they come out big for the bottom of the last. A visibly tired Hilton Smith allows the first five Stars batters to reach base and score, before he can just close out the game stranding two in an inning where the home team bats around much like the Grays did in the second.
A high scoring game bookended by homer power and shaky pitching - what's not to like about the first of many inter league games to come this season?
