CHI@LIN Game 2 - more homers, more errors

With the game tied 3-3, the Chicago Giants take the lead and force the Lincolns to go to their "bullpen" (which consists of the four other NY starters) after starter John Donaldson gives up two homers and a walk to start the seventh.

The NY relievers Byrd and Holland do manage to stop the bleeding, and their offense makes it close by scoring their fifth run in the eighth, but Rube Foster hangs on and avoids more chaos for the injury riddled Chicago bullpen by closing out the game himself.

He'll play short stop today so Mendez can pitch. Unfortunately the newly returned Dihigo has not even come up to bat for the first time before the Lincoln Giants give Mendez a really unpleasant welcome, batting around and scoring five runs on four hits, a sac fly and three walks. However, Dihigo does manage to draw a walk and start a counter rally in the second as the Chicago Giants send eight men to the plate and score three runs on three hits, two walks and a sac fly. Despite the good weather it seems not to be a pitchers' day... After these initial fireworks, things settle down a bit until the fifth when the visitors load the bases with no outs. Byrd seems to be completely off track, he is lifted in favor of Manning after six runs and no outs. For some time it looks like Mendez can take the game to a successful conclusion, but with solo homers in the eighth and ninth (the latter from from pinch hitting catcher Spoony Palms!) the Lincolns inch their way back into the game, and manage to tie it with two more runs off three singles in the bottom of the ninth. Mendez is lifted in favor of Mathis to limp into extra innings. The reliever then loads the bases with two outs in the bottom of the tenth, setting the table for a walk-off hit to the right field corner for Tubby Scales. An unexpectedly spectacular end to an exciting extra innings game, and the Lincoln Giants clearly underline their championship ambitions by advancing to 6-2 and taking two out of three from the NNL league leader. SoM NNL Replay: CHI@LIN game 1 - homers and errors

The Lincoln Giants start a seven game homestand with a three game interleague series against their NNL namesakes (and also first placed) Giants franchise from Chicago. Both teams will try to extend their league leading position, so let's see who can put some distance between themselves and the pursuing teams.

Bolstered by a three run first inning, and two-run homers from Suttles and Beckwith, Max Manning cruises through a strong complete game outing against a visiting team that is still clearly missing its injured star Dihigo to get the offensive going.

Manning scatters six hits and two walks wide enough to limit the Chicago Giants to only two runs despite two errors from his own defense vs. one committed by the visitors.

The Lincoln offense fires on all cylinders, with ten hits compensating for seven Ks and two players caught stealing by Chicago's replacement catcher Perkins who continues the league wide trend to discourage habitual base swipers...

SoM NNL Replay: STL@HOM game 2 - a wild day for the Stars

Bullet Joe Rogan struggles with control issues through 7+ innings, giving up four walks and four runs. Most of the damage is done in the fourth, when the Grays rack up five hits to score three runs.

Much in the same way, Double Duty Radcliffe starts his relief outing with a walk, loading the bases with no outs in the eighth, but can work out of it by inducing the Grays pitcher to hit into an inning ending double play.

A few late inning hits, including a towering homerun into the back rows of the center field spectators from Cool Papa Bell, are not enough to turn the game around for the visitors who drop two in a row against Homestead and now have to try to get some wins in two home games against the NNL's start studded Monarchs. Unfortunately they'll have to do that without Homerun Johnson who took a nasty fastball in on his ankle in his first at bat and will have to sit out at least a couple of games.

The Grays hope to get some more wins off the ECL last place Hilldales in yet another two game series at home.

SoM NNL Replay: STL@HOM game 1 - Pitchers duel by air, land and sea

The Homestead Grays continue their homestand with a two game inter-league series against the NNL's St. Louis Stars. Both teams are aiming to stay at or close to the top of their league. They already faced each other in the season opening series in St. Louis, where the Starts took two games out of three. However, today's matchup of the number one pitchers was decided in favor of the Grays on opening day, so let's see whether Hilton Smith can win another one against the Stars' Dave Brown despite the injuries that keep St. Louis starters Pop Loyd and Frank Warfield in the bench.

The game starts with some early fireworks. Cool Papa Bell greets Grays starter Hilton Smith by depositing a long ball into the right field bleachers, and the Stars top of the  lineup continue what they've done all season (the first six batters have a combined .405 average so far). Two singles and a walk later the Grays are happy to escape the first inning trailing only 2-0.

They also come back in style, loading the bases on two singles and a walk and making Stars starter Brown work hard to get out of the inning with just one run scored. Browns troubles continue in the second, when he has to work out of a bases loaded jam again and again makes it out of theninningnhaving conceded a single run.

The Grays continue working their way back into the game with solo homers from Robinson in the third and Chino Smith in the fourth. The Stars toil away, too, but with less luck as they keep stranding leadoff batters on base for several innings.

Now the pitchers are getting all the attention.

The sixth inning has all eyes on Hilton Smith - he helps manufacture a run by bunting Johnson to second for the RBI single by Cool Papa Bell, but then loads the bases on two hits and a walk in the bottom half of the inning, only to wiggle out of trouble once again with a K and  grounder to third.

In the seventh, Dave Brown strikes out the Grays and then proceeds to tie the game on a walk, a single from Cool Papa Bell and a sac Fly to center from Bullet Joe Rogan.

In the ninth, the Stars bring in Poles to hit for Brown and take over right field so Rogan can pitch the last inning. Tjey are promptly rewarded for the decision to push the offense, and manage to score Johnson on singles from Poles and Cool Papa Bell.

However, the Grays aren't done yet - lead off Chino Smith finishes a monater five-for-five game with his second solo homer of the day, and the Grays continue to beat up Rogan with more hits. With runners in first and third, Rogan is lifted in favor of Double Duty Radcliffe, but he promptly concedes a walk-off single to Harris for a final score of 5-6.
