SoM NNL Replay: STL@CHI game 2 - heat, homers and errors

The day is unusually hot, so let's see how teams will be dealing with being on the field for another 2-3 hours for game 2 of the day.

After Dihigos very successful return from injury (3 for 7, 2 walks), in the second game of the doubleheader the Giants hope to see Dick Redding return from injury with a win. The Stars, aiming to split the doubleheader, send their #1 starter to the mound hoping for a recovery not from outright injury, but from his disappointing 0-1, 7.94 ERA stats after his first two starts.

The game starts with a bang: a triple to the left field corner from leadoff Bell and a sac fly from bench-player-promoted-no-2-hitter Creacy gives the Stars a one run lead as many fans are still finding their places in Schorling Park. The second inning sees another Stars bench player, outfielder Spot Poles, add a run on a hard line drive home run to left center.

In the third, Redding walks leadoff Bell and gives up yet another homer (in Schorling Park!) to the aptly named Home Run Johnson. The Chicago bench is getting uneasy - maybe Redding is not fully recovered yet, after all? When Buck Leonard hits another screaming liner over the fence to make the score 5-0, the Giants bullpen starts getting busy.

A single to Brown, a steal and an RBI double by Trouppe later the Giants manager has seen enough and asks Verdell Mathis to end the inning to gain some time for a decision who will fill in for the bulk of the remaining innings - he ends up giving the ball to another recently recovered player, Dihigo.

Dihigo has a couple solid innings to begin with, but in the seventh inning the Giants defense begins to crumble. Maybe the heat is getting to them, maybe they are losing focus after a long day and being behind, anyway. Three errors and four runs later, Dihigo begins to weaken with one out eluding him in the eighth until he walks the bases on a two singles and a hit batter, and then gives up a grand slam homer to center field to Brown. The last out of the game is delayed by the first error committed by the St. Louis defense (maybe the Stars are tired from the heat, too), and the Giants at least score a consolation run, but the Stars take game 2 of the day with a very clear 14-1 victory on 12 runs (including three homers) and three Giants errors vs only three hits for the Giants and a single St. Louis error in the bottom of the ninth.

St. Louis first base man Buck Leonard has a field day, going 4 for 4 and missing just a double for the cycle, with a walk thrown in, too.

SoM NNL Replay: STL@CHI game 1 - Dihigo is back

In the first game of their Saturday double header and weekend three game series the St. Louis Stars send their number five starter Dizzy Dismukes (0-1, 5.0 ERA) to the mound against the Giants' Andy Cooper (2-0, 2.70 ERA). The series will make a big difference for the two teams on top of the NNL.

Both pitchers start the game with some solid innings. Dismukes is the first to show weakness: in his second at bat of the game, McNair starts the fourth with a solo homer to left center; two more hits and an error later Dismukes is lucky to escape from the inning just one run behind.

His troubles continue in the sixth, when the Giants batters see him for the third time in the game: he loads the bases on two hits and an error, walks in one run and gives up a two run double before getting out of the inning.

For the Giants, Dihigo is definitely back hitting a 2 for 3 with a walk thrown in. Cooper racks up another complete game and his league leading third win of the season.
